Welcome to our Web Site and our 12th year. SOCALPAPA's main objectives are bringing together those who are interested in Plein Air art, offering opportunities to paint together, promoting education and exhibiting our work. We look forward to seeing you at our Friday/Saturday paint-outs, potlucks and events.
We've found that painting together creates a camaraderie, an atmosphere for learning, and promotes high standards. Our Juried Competitions stretch our abilities and further raise the bar for excellence. Although, our most gratifying work is our efforts to raise funds for philanthropic endeavors as a Not-For-Profit Association.
Simply, we are artists doing what we love.... painting.

Devil's Punchbowl - Candace Foster

Candace Foster

I am a native Californian who concentrates on painting the southwest landscape.  I balance between realism and a more impressionistic style, as this approach reflects the balance between order and chaos that I see in nature.  I work both on site and in the studio, and I am fascinated by how light can reveal mood and detail.  I often include evidence of human habitation to remind us that we are part of the landscape, and even with our presence nature remains a source of solace, inspiration, and mystery.

I received my Masters degree in illustration from California State University, Long Beach, and my Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from California State University, Fullerton.  I have taught art, exhibited, and worked as a an illustrator.  I am currently represented by Bear Street Gallery, Costa Mesa and The Cottage Gallery, Laguna Beach.

I am honored to be awarded first place in the Socalpapa  "Earth and Sea" show, and to be a featured artist.  Like most artists I have doubts as to my abilities, and validation like this encourages me to keep on painting and trying to improve.  Membership in Socalpapa has given me entree into a world of opportunity for growth, exhibition, and interaction with other artists.  We share a common bond in our love of painting and our love of nature, and I am always learning from my fellow members.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL SHOW

 Running November 5 to December 30, 2011

Our Reception last Saturday was well attended by Patrons and Artists and we had a steady stream of visitors. Within the first hour of opening, we had a sale - a pretty good start for the holiday shopping season.

The quality of the paintings was outstanding with diverse subjects and styles. If you haven't visited The Show yet, we urge you to see the wonderful work of your member friends. Our Judge, Jim Wodark, said it was difficult to assign scores and decide the Award winners.

Jim, we are immensely grateful for the time you spent judging our 65 entries and for the comments you left for each entrant. By the way, the comments can be found by logging in on www.onlinejuriedshows.com.

Also, a big "Thank You" goes to the many volunteers who helped make this event possible.

To view the entire show online please go to www.OnlineJuriedShows.com and click on "Closed Shows"

California Impressionists: Then and Now

California Impressionism: Then and Now Features 58 Elegant Paintings

Following on the success of last year’s Impressionism show, we hung our second show of the same name and our 7ths show in the gallery.  California Impressionism: Then and Now includes 58 paintings and 4 alternates.  There were 73 entries which indicates the enthusiasm our members have for showing in the gallery.

The paintings feature works depicting the California landscape, once painted by the early California Impressionists, but as it appears today—still beautiful, ever-inspiring and always moving to the artist who captures it and to the viewers who immerse themselves in the story being told in light and color.

This year’s judge, Dave Rahn, an avid collector of plein air art and an artist himself, was present at the March 5 opening reception to provide insight into how he made the awards.  After serious review of the paintings on-line, adding kudos and constructive criticism, the judge looked at each painting in person, selecting our award winners and commenting on what moved him in each work of art. About Rita Pacheco’s first place pro entry winner, “Batiquitos Morning,” he noted, “this beautifully captures the light and draws the eye into the reflection at the back of the painting—beautiful work.”  About Karen Wadsworth’s first place non-pro entry, “California Gold,” he said “Love the tree’s shape and the looseness, but it is obviously an orange tree.  It tells a story—this says “California.”  Karen’s painting also sold opening night!  Many thanks to Dave from us all, especially for the time he took to make comments on each entry which helps us all to get better.

Award Winners:

Pro:

First Place—Rita Pacheco “Batiquitos Morning”

Second Place—Jack Wang “Spring Awakenings”

Third Place John Eagle “ Aliso Beach Sunset”

Honorable Mentions: Susan Jarecky, “Mountain Glory;” Steve Wang, “Wave Watchers;” Liza Mozzini-McDill, “Colorado Street Rainbow”

Non-Pro:

First Place—Karen Wadsworth, “California Gold”

Second Place—Erich Neubert, “Caspers Creek”

Third Place—David Zenger, “Canyon Shadows”

Honorable Mentions—Lore Hold, “Corona Coast;” Brian Wolf, “Santa Ana River’” and Lori Quarton “Pelican Watch”

Artists’ Choice awards went to Sung Su for “Morning at Black Star Canyon” and to Gobind Boyes for “Last Wetlands”

I would like to thank each artist who submitted their work for this magnificent show.  I enjoyed being the show director learning from Judith Cameron and JoAnn Royal about all the effort that goes into a successful show.  They both provided advice every step of the way.  In the final analysis it is not only all about the art, but also about the volunteers who helped make the show a success.

Thanks go to” Alan Nowell for design of the postcard, advertisements and title cards; Erich Neubert for assisting with data management and coordinating use of the Onlinejuriedshows.com website; Lori Quarton, Shihal Howard, Silvia Ramos and Arlene Cartozian for check-in assistance; Kevin Davidson, Sung Su and Albert Stanchfield who helped hang the show and light it beautifully.  Albert also took photos of all the award winners.  Rita Olin, Marilou Hogenboom, Peggy Spaulding and Gil Park organized the reception and provided the beautiful food and flowers. Wendy Wirith sent out all those bulletins and Josh Nolan organized gallery staffing.

Congratulations to all the artists and to all our members.  Keep on painting—the “Paint the Parks display show will be here before you know it and we want it to be a smashing success with a great turn out to celebrate the beauty of plein air painting.

Greg LaRock Demo

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Greg LaRock generously donated his time and talent to do our first Painting Demo of the year.
And what a magnificent day for it at Little Corona! He selected a spot down on the beach looking south toward the tide pools. With over 40 members looking on, he proceeded to thrill us all. Pointing out his tools of the trade and how to select his composition. He described every step he was taking through-out the painting session. Even making wrong choices and how to correct them. It was very inspiring. And of course someone snatched up his painting for a great price! Go to his website link from Members Gallery for dates of his workshops & classes.
We thank him profusely for all he does for SOCALPAPA.

Mark Lambert Passing

For those of you who did not know...Mark Lambert passed away on Aug 22 after a long bout with colon cancer.

Mark was a volunteer Naturalist at the Muth Center and he joined us in 2003 so he could represent both the Naturalist’s and SOCALPAPA in the Premier paint-out, competition
and show. Mark also served as co-chair for the 2005 event. His painting days ended with the
onset of cancer. I spoke with him on the phone about once a year and he was sad to give up the many organizations he supported. Those wishing to send cards may send them to Carol Lambert 5520 River Ave, Newport Beach, 92663
