JUDITH CAMERON

Joining SOCALPAPA in 2003 was one of the most joyous and momentous decisions I have ever made. I was a brand new painter, though with a strong background in drawing, and it was wonderful to be welcomed so warmly into a group who obviously loved every minute of their time painting. I have learned more from my fellow artists than I ever did in school. Our group is unique I think in welcoming all levels of accomplishment, while continually provided the means and opportunity to improve. Now we have our own gallery! What could be better?

Painting for me has no deep philosophical meaning. I simply love the challenge of rendering a scene; using my drawing skills and applying an ever changing and growing palette of technique and color as I learn from practice and from my fellow artists.

Morro Bay Paint-Away

Thank you to everyone who joined in on the Morro Bay paintaway. I don't know about you, but that is definitely one of my favorite places and feel lucky that we were  graced with such beautiful weather.

I have received a great suggestion to help us improve these outings by offering a "meet and greet/kick-off" gathering upon our arrival. That way new members have a chance to become famililar with those of us who already know one another and we can all catch up on any last minute details regarding painting sites, etc.

Please let me hear from you if you have any further suggestions for improvement or new ideas to consider.

Thanks again for painting with me. It is always a joy to explore new places and share this passion with my fellow painters. And if you didn't join us in Morro Bay, we hope to see you next time.

All the best, Kay

Interview with Kay Flierl

Artist interview for July- Kay Flierl

In continuing to celebrate our wonderful members, and the amazing artists that belong to SOCALPAPA, here is our interview with Kay Flierl

Kay is the artist that painted the artist choice winner at our Mission Show. In addition to being a great painter, among the list of her many artistic talents, please add organization and leadership. Kay coordinates all of out paint away trips for SOCALPAPA.

How long have you been painting?

About 6 years.

Where did you train to paint? School? Workshops?

I’m mostly self-taught through books and my driven nature, but in the last few years I’ve taken

a number of workshops from the many talented artists in southern California.

What led you to plein air rather than strictly studio painting?

I still enjoy and pursue both, but I started plein air painting just shortly before moving to CA three years ago. My initial draw was Kevin McPherson’s first book. I was captivated by the brushwork and light in his paintings. From there I bought my first portable easel and I was on my way. I’ve always spent much of my time outdoors and thankfully, once I moved to CA, I could do that year round. I absolutely love to have my toes in the sand and a paintbrush in my hand.

What are the 3 most important lessons you’ve learned as a painter that helped you to improve?

First to persevere. Second to persevere and third to persevere.

What 3 pieces of advice would you give to beginning painters?

No matter what you paint like today, you will be better tomorrow.

What 3 - 5 artists do you admire and aspire to emulate and why?

That’s a tough one because I like so many styles of painting. For plein air, I look to Sorolla for light and Dan McCaw and Randall Sexton for brushwork. For non-representational, there is Wolf Kahn, Bernd Haussman and Forrest Moses. However, I am still trying to develop my work into something that crosses between representational and non-representational. My inspiration in that journey is Roger Kuntz and Stuart Shils.

Is there one single artist who has had the most influence on your style?

I don’t think I’ll ever narrow it to just one. I take bits and pieces from so many and will hopefully meld them into my own.

How do you balance the demands of the marketplace with staying true to your vision?

My paintings are only as good as my passion. Therefore, I think it all comes down to the relationship between the gallery and the artist. I had a non-representational series of large paintings that I burned out on after about 70 paintings. I knew I was bored with it and didn’t know where to take it next. Initially after stopping the series, my galleries kept hoping I would come back to it. But thankfully, they have allowed me to investigate other work, to grow as an artist and to nurture that growth by continuing to represent my work.

What technical tips have you discovered that are especially helpful and/or unique?

I don’t think you can focus on any one in particular, but rather celebrating each moment another one finally sinks in!!!
